It is essential to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance for those living close by. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud cries that could be disruptive to those who live in condos or apartments.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once the birds’ sex is determined, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the owner must be patient and understand that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and correct any behavioral issues.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington Where to Buy macaw she could live the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita’s health and condition but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid per day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken away from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is in danger living in a tank which some believe is too small.
Lolita’s Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and want to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita’s current state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.
It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor isn’t obliged to disclose the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an integral part in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite these ongoing health concerns there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
